Biden Warns Netanyahu Against Israeli Military Action

Biden Calls for De-escalation

Phone Call Focused on Tensions in Gaza

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against Israeli military action during a phone call on Monday. The call came amid escalating tensions in the Gaza Strip, where Israeli airstrikes have killed dozens of Palestinians.

According to a White House statement, Biden "reiterated his strong support for Israel's right to self-defense, but also conveyed that he expects Israel to do everything possible to avoid civilian casualties." Biden also called for "de-escalation and a restoration of calm."

Netanyahu's office said in a statement that the prime minister "appreciated President Biden's understanding of Israel's security challenges" but did not provide details of the conversation.

The phone call was the first known conversation between Biden and Netanyahu since the Israeli leader was reelected in March. The two leaders are expected to meet in person at the White House in the coming weeks.
